I've always loved the game of checkers. And chess, though admittedly I never played either very often. But from time to time, it inspires me to make a Game Board. This board, No. 1979, is made of Black Limba (a dense hardwood from West Africa), Maple (thin border), Red Oak (side A) and Crismon Epoxy (side B). The outside frame is Walnut. The board is finished with several coats of gloss polyurathane. I had the idea for this in my mind, but building it was a little trickier than I thought. It was rewarding and satisfying in the same way a game of chess can be.
The playing board measures 13.5 inches square and is approximately 1 inch thick. It is finished with durable, food grade mineral oil and bees wax. There are two different playable side for use: the side with Black Limba and Red Oak squares OR the side with Black Limba and epoxy squares. Or if you're not feeling either... you can use in the kitchen for food!
